If you are stopped for a traffic offense.
1. Do not argue with the officer.
2. Do not joke with the officer.
3. Be respectful of the officer, and provide the documentation (for example, license, registration, insurance card).
4. If you must get them (from a glove compartment, or from within a jacket), tell the officer what you are going to do and get his/her OK before you move.
5. If you are not sure why you were stopped, ask respectfully.
6. If you feel you are not guilty, never admit you are guilty (as foolish as this may sound, people do get nervous).
7. If you are do not believe you are guilty, it is better to say so respectfully. For example, it is better to say "I was following traffic, and I was looking at my speedometer, and I did not see that I was exceeding the speed limit" than it is to say "You are wrong, I was not speeding"
8. DO NOT LIE. If you have never had a speeding ticket, it would be worth mentioning. If you have had one, DO NOT TRY TO DENY IT. The police computer can easily check on your record, and if you are not honest it will not look good.
9. If you get a ticket, remember you do have a right to dispute it in court (you will have an appearance date on the ticket). You may wish to have legal representation to assist you in court.
